Lake Medusa – turns animals to stone

Lake Natron in northern Tanzania calcifies animals after they are submerged in the water. The pH – between 9 and 10.5 – effectively turns the animals to stone as they dry out. Photographer Nick Brandt has taken the birds and bats found along the shore, posed them as if they were alive, and returned with some incredible photographs.
